'Dr. J' Julius Erving Says Brooklyn Nets Are Trying to 'Buy a Championship' | THE ODD COUPLE

  • Published on: 15 April 2021
  • THE ODD COUPLE - Chris Broussard & Rob Parker react to Julius Erving saying the following about the formation of the Brooklyn Nets:

“It’s reminiscent of how the Yankees used to do it all the time. They load up – they call it ‘buying a championship.’ The Lakers are known for doing that too.

“They’re getting all these pieces … they don’t know at the end of the season what it’s going to look like or what it’s going to feel like, but they’re going to be formidable. You’ve got a team with six former All-Stars, and three [All-NBA] guys who have been there and succeeded in the playoffs.”

Why is everybody skipping over the fact that Boston went and got 2 certified hall of famers in KG and Ray Allen to go alongside of Paul Pierce before Lebrun ever thought of going to Miami?

Baseball teams buy championship teams all the time.

    BEAST MOED   3 weeks ago

Yeah, so are the Lakers and Clippers. That's the issue with the league, only a few teams actually go in for a chip. The NBA isn't that competitive regardless of the media washing. Saying otherwise is false advertisement.

This is just foolish. All teams buy championships. That’s why they pay these athletes millions to play sports, just for the bragging rights of winning. Only a fool would spend that type of money with no expectations of winning it all. The media just hates that Kevin Durant is always on their necks and are now trying to plant a seed that if he wins in Brooklyn, it is not earned.

I really am fans of you both. Chris had mastered selling his perspective in a more corporate and commercial way. Great job Chris! Now my 2 cents comment is: I'm sort of tired of people feeling a certain way about players taking more control of the NBA business and making boss moves. When Owners, Presidents, and GM make power moves on players and build their teams...I don't see alot of uproar, like when the players dictate the moves. EVERY team is trying to buy a championship!! No different if the superstar players pull the strings or the executives. And one last point, it doesn't make the league boring at all! The media has way more subject matter for ratings and viewers are tuning in.

Love me some dr.J but his point is irrelevant. Every team in every sport given the opportunity will try and buy a championship. Nuff said.

Jordan did not build the Bulls up sir it was the Bulls Front Office that built the Bulls up. They were the ones that drafted Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant and traded for Bill Cartwright. They were the ones that constructed that Championship roster NOT JORDAN so get it right. And HELL NO Jordan isn't the best basketball player of all time.
